Astronomy students finally brought in their solargraphs, or “cans,” that they set outside in the beginning of the school year. Photographic paper is put inside an aluminum drink can. A small hole lets the sunlight from the sun moving across the sky each day expose the paper. This leaves a trail across the sky. Each student posted the cans outside for 4 months. In the photos you can see how the trails lowered each day as we approached winter. You can also see at the edges how the sun sets more south of east each day, until it starts its trip back up higher into the sky in late December. The lowest trail marks the Winter Solstice, the shortest day of the year.

WATER UPDATE: Please note, the school is currently experiencing water flow concerns. Impacts from these concerns tend to affect water flow mainly at the end of the school day. We are working diligently to identify and resolve this matter. As a precaution, portable toilets have been placed around the school to ensure facilities are available in the event of low water flow. The Cotopaxi School District is working with Fremont County Public Health, Colorado Division of Water Resources, the District 12 Deputy Water Commissioner, and CDPHE to work to resolve these concerns and ensure compliance with all proper laws and regulations.

Below is information for post-season high school basketball. District tournament dates are: February 21st top 4 seeds will host, February 24-25 semifinals and finals at Del Norte High School. Link to the CHSAA Seeding Index: https://chsaanow.com/sports/2022/7/20/chsaa-postseason-seeding-index.aspx Post-season info from the basketball bulletin: Districts/Regionals/State:1.Identical format for boys & girls 2.District seeding will be done by the CHSAA Seeding & Selection Index (50% MaxPreps & 50% RPI), UNLESS the district unanimously agrees to seed by another method (this exception is for 2A only). MaxPreps and RPI will be run through Districts. 3.District winners (8) advancing to the 32-team state bracket are guaranteed a top 8 (host slot) as long as they are in the top 16 of the CHSAA Seeding & Selection Index after Districts. 4.Remaining 24 teams are filled in by the CHSAA Seeding & Selection Index published after Districts. 5.Seeding criteria for the 32-team state bracket –CHSAA Seeding & Selection Index published after Districts. Seeds 9-24 are true seeded except to try and avoid league matchups in the first round only. Teams may be moved one spotup or down. Teams 25-32 may then be moved based upon geography and league matchups. 6.First two rounds of the state tournament (Regionals) will be hosted by the top seed in that quadrant of the bracket, over two days. (4-teams total). It is strongly recommended that if a school has both girls and boys playing in Regionals, that the host school take this into consideration when scheduling (to try to allow schools to follow both genders). 7.Teams will not be reseeded prior to the final week –state championships (final 8) 8.Top 8 teams will advance. Class 2A Great 8 will play a consolation bracket.

The fifth graders are wrapping up their Renaissance Unit in English Language Arts. We have learned about various outstanding art patrons, artists, and scholars who were well-known during this wonderful cultural time period. Students have been writers, researchers, and art critics during this unit. They have learned how to identify different art and architecture techniques and features, analyzing works of Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, and Brunelleschi. Our scholars have also been perfecting their paragraph writing and researching their chosen artists to compile a biography style powerpoint. We are so proud of our writing journey and cannot wait to share our biography powerpoint presentations!

Sophomores worked on demonstrating proper workplace actions and attitudes during ICAP this week. Working in groups, they were given various scenarios and then had to act them out in short skits. Afterwards, we discussed the positives and negatives of what was happening in each skit.

The sophomore and freshmen English classes have been delving into the art of rhetoric. Over the past week, students have been searching through media to learn and locate persuasive (rhetorical) techniques and devices. With the use of "good old" scissors and glue, they cut out examples from magazines and pasted them on posters to show their understanding. The students enjoyed this project as it was something new and different from the everyday lessons.

First-graders have practiced their public speaking and listening skills by having Show and Tell every Thursday. Students work on standing up straight, talking loud enough for everyone to hear, and not using their props in a distracting manner. They have also worked on giving the speaker full attention, keeping their hands and feet quiet, and staying silent until an appropriate time. Last week, we had lots of fun using these skills to have a class debate over whether cats or dogs make better pets.

In Math, our fifth graders have wrapped up a lesson on adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators as well as the challenging concept of adding and subtracting mixed numbers. We have also been enjoying our multiplication facts games, where we compete in two teams and race to the board to answer a multiplication problem. Our goal is to make math fun and exciting to ensure we are prepared to tackle Middle School Math!
